NEW YORK — The Columbia men's swimming and diving team hosted Princeton on Friday afternoon at Uris Natatorium. Both teams battled right until the very end of the meet, but the Tigers came away with a narrow 168-132 victory.
"Wow! What a great meet for the team," Head Coach
Jim Bolster said. "Princeton is an excellent program, but I think we rattled them and forced them to make lineup changes that I don't think they anticipated having to make in order to secure the win."
The opening 200 medley relay set the tone for the entire meet, as Princeton's A relay team just edged out Columbia's A relay team by .07 seconds.
Isaac Beers,
Demirkan Demir,
Brian Lee, and
Zion James touched the wall with a time of 1:27.01. Both times beat the previous Uris Pool record.
In the first individual event of the afternoon, it was
Zach Vasser who clinched the Lions' first victory of the day, taking first place in the 1000 with a time of 9:03.87.
Stephen Zhukov placed third with a time of 9:09.26.
Adam Wu followed that up with a dominant victory in the 200 free, winning the event with a time of 1:35.46 and setting a new pool record in the process. First year
Gian Santos was right behind him in second place with a time of 1:35.48.
Demirkan Demir won the 100 breast yet again, setting a new pool record with a time of 52.65.
Joshua Corn also set a new Uris Pool Record with a time of 1:55.85 to win the 200-breast.
Zion James continued his run of strong sprints, winning the 50 free with a time of 19.81. James then came up just short in the 100 free, finishing in second place with a time of 44.00.
In the last individual event of the afternoon, it was Santos picking up his first win of the day with a time of 1:48.58 in the 200 IM.
As for the divers,
Joseph Nicol was Columbia's top finisher in the 3m with a score of 320.63 which was good for fourth place. He followed that up with a third place finish on the 1m boards with a score of 311.85.
"It's always good to see how you measure up against the best divers in the league," Head Diving Coach
Scott Donie said. "It was a solid day for both Will and Joe. Glad to see NCAA zone qualifying scores in both events for Joe."
