Reigning champs look to defend their tournament title
NEW YORK — The Columbia men's golf team will begin its 2024 spring season at The Savannah Intercollegiate this weekend. The two-day, 54-hole event begins Saturday at The Club at Savannah Harbor.
Columbia is the tournament's reigning champion, winning last year's event with a 54-hole score of 8-under-par 856. Three Lions finished inside the top five on the individual leaderboard, led by Nathan Han in third at 5-under par. Wyatt McGovern (-3) took fourth and DJ Francey (-2) tied for fifth.
Han, Francey, McGovern, William Sung and Darren Pang will be the five Lions competing in this year's team event. Alvin Kwak, George Rubelsky and Hunter Po will compete as individuals.
Columbia will be part of a 15-team field at this year's event, which includes Charlotte, North Alabama, Longwood, Harvard, Holy Cross, Siena, Dartmouth, Sacred Heart, Fairleigh Dickinson, NC Central, Iona, SCAD Savannah, South Carolina Beaufort and Xavier.
The Lions are coming off a successful fall campaign that saw them win The Doc Gimmler (Sept. 9-10) and the Columbia Autumn Invitational (Sept. 30-Oct. 1). The team posted a new 54-hole program scoring record of 29-under-par 811 to win The Doc Gimmler. Han won the event individually at 14-under 196, breaking his own Columbia scoring record from last season (-13). DJ Francey, who finished second to Han at The Doc Gimmler, won the following weekend at the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate.
Director of Golf Rich Mueller picked up his 20th career tournament victory at the Columbia Autumn Invitational. The Lions defended their title from the year prior. Han finished runner-up and all five team competitors were inside the top 30.
Columbia completed the fall season with a 40-9-0 head-to-head record.
This weekend's event starts with 36 holes of continuous play on Saturday and concludes with the final 18 holes on Sunday. Live results will be available throughout the tournament on Golfstat.
