NEW YORK — Brooks Ralph '19SEAS, who was a member of the Columbia lightweight rowing program, passed away in a tragic skiing accident Tuesday, February 20, in Vermont.
"Brooks was an exceptional student, athlete, and teammate," said Peter Pilling, Columbia's Campbell Family Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. "Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Brooks' family and friends during this incredibly challenging time."
Brooks came to Morningside Heights from Upper Canada College in Toronto, Canada, in 2015. During his time on the lightweight rowing team, Brooks was a part of two IRA National Championships in 2016 and 2018. Academically, while at Columbia, Brooks maintained a 4.0 GPA and was inducted into the engineering honor society as well as earned Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) All-Academic Team honors in 2017.
After graduating from Columbia in 2019, Brooks started his career in investment banking at Barclays and later joined Hunter Point Capital as an investment associate. Brooks is survived by his parents, Wayne and Sue, and his younger sister, Steffi.
"In his first year, Brooks was part of a class that helped the team win its first-ever national championship," said lightweight rowing head coach, Nich Lee Parker. "He also shaped the culture of the program to keep striving for more. In that way, Brooks is with us every day, and we miss him. Our sincerest condolences to Sue, Wayne, and Brooks' entire family."
A memorial service will be held in Toronto on Thursday, March 7. Please contact Jenson Carlgren at jec2242@columbia.edu or Lorenzo Frati at lf2515@columbia.edu if you are interested in attending or have any questions. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Brooks' name to a charity dear to his heart, The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).
