Lions test themselves against the professional ranks
LAS VEGAS — First-year Eunice Choi took gold in the Collegiate Recurve Female Division to highlight the Columbia archery team's weekend at The Vegas Shoot. The event took place February 1-4 at the South Point Hotel and Casino.
Choi's score of 855 registered an impressive 21st in the Championship Recurve Female Division, which includes professional and Olympic archers. All of Columbia's archers shot in the championship pools. The scores of the collegiate competitors were then extracted from the championship pools to create the collegiate pools.
"This is the kind of event you shoot at to measure yourself against the best in the world," Columbia head coach Derek Davis said. "Even outside of collegiate, it gives us this frame of reference and confidence – the fact that we can go there and be competitive with the best in the world. We can come back to collegiate shooting with this confidence that we can go toe-to-toe with anybody. It's a fun tournament to have in your schedule and build your confidence.
"Eunice's win in the collegiate division was very exciting. She was holding onto first place after the first two days and had a three-point lead going into the third day. They fell into a tie after the first end, then Eunice fell all the way to third but had an amazing finish to pull it out by one point."
Choi beat out a pool of 20 archers to win collegiate recurve female gold with a score of 572. Sophomore Lillian Han was seventh with a score of 551. Michelle Ahn (541) and Judith Gottlieb (541) also placed in the top 10. Davis was also very complimentary of first-year Emily Rosenfeld (473), whom he said has been building with every tournament.
Giselle DeSousa was Columbia's lone competitor in the compound. The sophomore from the Netherlands took 11th among the collegiate ranks with a score of 591, just six points off the winning score of 597 from Zoe Woods of Mount Marty University.
Columbia's next event is the USA Archery Indoor Nationals, Feb. 24-25, in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
