Baseball Drops Series Finale at No. 11 East Carolina

Lions return home Tuesday to play Hofstra

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Columbia baseball lost the series finale of its three-game set against No. 11 East Carolina, 8-6, from Lewis Field at Clark LeClair Stadium on Sunday.

Despite the loss, the Columbia offense exploded for 13 hits this afternoon, including three home runs. Jack Cooper launched his sixth home run of the season in the top of the fourth. Cooper leads Columbia (3-11) in home runs and average and has earned Ivy League Player of the week honors as well as NCAA D1 Player of the Week honors this season.

In the top of the eighth, Miles Blackwell mashed a three-run home run to left to bring Columbia back into the game. Anton Lazits then followed up by crushing a two-run home run to left in the top of the ninth to make it 8-6. Additionally, Cole Hage, Eric Jeon, Sam Miller, and Skye Selinsky all recorded multi-hit performances.

Jake Hunter started on the mound for East Carolina (14-4). He threw 3.2 innings, earning a no-decision while allowing five hits and a run scored. Danny Beal earned the win in relief, moving his record on the season to 2-1. He threw 2.1 shutout innings, providing the Pirates with a strong performance in relief.

East Carolina's offense put up a strong showing once again. The Pirates struck first and jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings of play. In the bottom of the fourth, Ryley Johnson homered for the second time in this series to extend East Carolina's lead to 5-1. An inning later, Justin Wilcoxen blasted an opposite field two-run home run to add to the Pirate lead.

Columbia is back in action on Tuesday as the Lions take on Hofstra at 3:30 p.m. from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
