Midweek baseball, softball, lacrosse on tap
NEW YORK — The Columbia baseball, softball and lacrosse teams all have midweek games lined up for Tuesday and Wednesday, The baseball team will take on UConn Tuesday afternoon in Connecticut. Meanwhile, softball will also be in the Constitution State on Wednesday to battle Fairfield. Later that day, lacrosse has an interborough matchup in Staten Island against Wagner.
BASEBALL
The baseball team (10-12, 5-1) enters Tuesday's matchup with UConn (9-15) on a five-game winning streak and having swept reigning Ivy League Champion Penn over the weekend for the first time since 2013. Cole Fellows was named Ivy League Player of the Week after going 9-for-16 with three homers, 10 RBIs and five runs scored. Columbia sits atop the conference standings after two series of Ivy League play. Following Sunday's series finale victory, head coach Brett Boretti tied Paul Fernandes as the program's all-time wins leader with 359. The Lions are 2-3 all-time against UConn and earned a come-from-behind 19-14 victory last season at home against the Huskies.
SOFTBALL
The softball team (9-15, 4-2) returns to action with a midweek matchup on the road at Fairfield (5-21) on Wednesday. The Lions are coming off an Ivy League series victory at Cornell last weekend after rallying back from a six-run deficit early in the game. Cami Neal was named the Ivy League Player of the Week for her efforts in helping lead the Lions to wins in three of their four games last week. Neal registered seven hits through four games, including two home runs. She led the team at the plate with a .583 batting average and a 1.167 slugging percentage. Columbia looks to secure its second straight midweek win after defeating Monmouth at home last week.
LACROSSE
The lacrosse team (2-7, 0-3) is back in action on Wednesday after a week off. The Lions will make the quick trip to Staten Island to take on the Wagner Seahawks (3-6) for a non-conference game scheduled for 6 p.m. Columbia is 2-4 so far in out-of-conference games, with three of those losses coming by the exact score of 13-12. Last time out, the Lions took on Brown at Kraft Field but came up short. Michelle Zhai matched her career-high with five points and notched her second hat trick in the contest. Columbia will look to bounce back against Wagner on Wednesday.
