NEW YORK — Columbia track and field, baseball, softball and men's tennis are featured in this week's edition of Lions on the Road. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus.
TRACK AND FIELD
The track & field team is back in action this weekend, with two meets on tap. The Lions will be sending student-athletes to compete in both the Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville on both Friday and Saturday, and the Wake Forrest Invitational hosted in Winston Salem on Friday. The outdoor season is off to a good start for the Lions, and that success continued last weekend. Columbia collected three second place finishes at the Larry Ellis Invite, highlighted by Tess Darnell who placed second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.11. In addition, Camylin Blake took second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.76. Devon Davey led the men with a second place finish in the 400m, clocking in at 47.35. Meanwhile, in Storrs at the UCONN Northeast Challenge, Phoebe Anderson had the highest placement for the Lions, finishing in third place in the 1,500m with a time of 4:20.13. The Lions will look to keep up the momentum heading into this weekend.
BASEBALL
The Lions (16-14, 9-3) look to keep pace atop the Ivy League standings this weekend at Brown (8-21, 3-9). Columbia leads the Ivy League in batting average, runs, doubles, triples, home runs, RBIs, total bases, and slugging percentage. Columbia has been belting extra-base hits, ranking third in the country in doubles per game (2.7) and 18th in home runs per game (1.8). The Lions are coming off a gutsy 11-9 win at St. John's on Tuesday night, where Griffin Palfrey smacked a game-winning two-run triple in the eighth inning.
Columbia is 72-63-1 all-time against Brown and has won 21 of its last 24 games with the Bears. On the mound, starter Derek Yoo has given up the least amount of hits (29) and has the lowest opponent batting average (.215) among pitchers in the conference.
SOFTBALL
Columbia returns to the Ivy League schedule this weekend with a series at Brown. Columbia is 7-5 in conference play after being swept by Harvard at home last weekend. The Lions enter the weekend in fourth place in the most recent Ivy League standings. Columbia has earned series wins against Princeton, Cornell and Penn so far this season. Brown sits just behind Columbia with a 5-7 conference record. Columbia got the week started with a 10-6 win over Iona on Wednesday. The Lions hit two home runs in the contest, including two from Savanna Messner and a grand slam by Sarah Mikami.
MEN'S TENNIS
The No. 8 Columbia men's tennis team hits the road this weekend for the final two matches of the regular season. The Lions will get the weekend started against No. 68 Yale at 1 p.m. Saturday in New Haven, Connecticut. Columbia will then travel to Brown for a 1 p.m. match Sunday to finish off the regular season. Columbia defeated No. 13 Harvard, 4-3 at home last weekend and needs to win both matches this weekend to claim an Ivy League Championship. Following the win over Harvard, the Lions improved from No. 10 to No. 8 in this week's ITA Rankings.
