Men's Soccer, Men's Tennis, Cross Country, Volleyball and Women's Soccer all set for road competition this week
NEW YORK — Columbia men's soccer, men's tennis, cross country, volleyball, and women's soccer are featured in this week's edition of Lions on the Road. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus.
MEN'S SOCCER
The men's soccer team (0-2-0) visits Manhattan (1-3-0) for a New York City battle on Patriot's Day at 6 p.m. The two sides will meet for the fourth straight season and the 13th all-time matchup. Columbia is an unbeaten 9-0-3 against the Jaspers since the series began in 1977. However, this will be just the second time the Lions have played Manhattan on the road. The only other road game came two years ago in Gaelic Park, which resulted in a 1-1 draw. The Lions scored on an own goal in the 32nd minute of that contest before Manhattan leveled the score on a penalty kick early in the second half.
MEN'S TENNIS
Coming off a run to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals, the Lions kick off the 2024 fall season at the Southern Intercollegiates, hosted by Georgia starting on Friday. Columbia returns two-time All-American Michael Zheng, fresh off his run to the NCAA Individual Championship Round. The Lions also brings back regulars Nicolas Kotzen, Hugo Hashimoto and Max Westphal while welcoming four newcomers.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Lions have a busy weekend ahead, competing at both the Spiked Shoe Invitational hosted by Penn State and the Iona Meet of Champs hosted by the Gaels. Both meets will be on Friday, September 13, and both will start at 10 a.m. Spiked Shoe Invitational will be at the Blue & White Golf Courses in University Park, Pennsylvania, and the Meet of Champs will be local at Van Cortlandt Park. Columbia opened the season last weekend at the Fordham Fiasco. The women placed second in the competition, while the men finished in third place, and both teams combined for seven top-10 finishers. Grace Carr was Columbia's highest finisher, placing third overall in the 5k with a time of 20:09.30. Tyler Tubman paced the men with a sixth-place finish in the 8k.
VOLLEYBALL
Columbia hits the road for the first time in 2024 this weekend, heading to Rhode Island to partake in the Friar Classic hosted by Providence. First up will be a game against Stonehill on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by a match against the host Friars at 7 p.m. The Lions will finish things up with a game against St. Peter's on Saturday at 1 p.m. Columbia is fresh off hosting the Big Apple Tournament at Levien last weekend, earning its first win of the season over Manhattan on Friday night. Williamson collected a career-high nine kills and 14.5 points thanks to five total blocks and two aces in the win. In a loss to Fordham in four sets on Saturday, Eva Atkins smashed a career-high 15 kills.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
After hosting Fordham on Thursday night, the women's soccer team (0-2-3) heads back on the road to take on its second Top 25 opponent of the season in Penn State. The battle between the Lions and 12th-ranked Nittany Lions is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. This will be the first all-time meeting between the two programs and the third power-conference opponent so far this season on Columbia's schedule – they have already played on the road at Vanderbilt and then-No. 2 North Carolina. The Lions are hoping to turn things around after going goalless in four of their first five matches, two of which have resulted in 0-0 draws.
