Lions begin Niki Miller era against the Minutewomen
NEW YORK — Columbia field hockey begins the 2024 campaign on Friday at UMass with faceoff set for 3 p.m. from Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
How to Watch/Follow
Friday's season opener against UMass can be watched live on ESPN+ and followed via live stats.
A New Era
Columbia hired Niki Miller as the seventh head coach in program history ahead of the 2024 season. Miller arrives in Morningside Heights after six seasons as Wagner's first-ever head coach. She led the Seahawks to three straight Northeast Conference Tournament appearances from 2021-23 and reached the final last season. Miller amassed a 19-8 record in NEC play at Wagner and oversaw 14 Seahawks garner All-NEC recognition.
The Washington, New Jersey, native arrived at Wagner from Sacred Heart, where she served as an assistant coach for the field hockey team under head coach Sydney Van Der Merwe for two seasons. During her tenure with the Pioneers, Miller oversaw the teams' offensive development, implementing strategies for practices and games that resulted in a 62.5 percent increase in goals from 2017 to 2018. She also played a pivotal role in recruiting, successfully attracting more than 10 commitments from high school athletes.
Miller was a standout field hockey athlete at Friday's opponent, UMass. In her time there, she helped lead the Minutewomen to three Atlantic 10 Championships and three NCAA Tournament berths, having reached the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite 8 once. She was appointed captain of the team in her junior and senior seasons and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament team in her final season.
Miller will be assisted by Jack Gallucci, who arrived from Fairfield where he was an assistant for six years.
The Schedule
The Lions will play seven games at home in 2024. Following the season-opener, Columbia hosts LIU for its home opener on Friday, Sept. 13. Two days later, the Lions are back at home for a matchup with Bucknell on Sept. 15. Ivy League play commences on Friday, Sept. 20 at Cornell.
Columbia's regular season finale and senior day is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 3 vs. Dartmouth. The Ivy League Tournament is set for the weekend of Nov. 8-10 and will be hosted by the highest seed. The full schedule can be found by clicking here.
The Roster
Lizzie Adams, Margot Houle, Ashley and Kate Kim, Jacinta Solari Etcheberry, Nicole Campolattaro and Sophie Lawrence were announced as the program's 2024 recruiting class. All seven players will enroll at Columbia as first-years.
