Field Hockey Drops Season Opener at UMass

Campolattaro nets first-career goal

AMHERST, Mass. — Columbia field hockey fell in its season opener at UMass, 4-1, on Friday from Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.

UMass (1-2) opened the scoring 2:24 into the match off a penalty corner. Elani Sherwood had a tip-in that gave the Minutewomen a 1-0 lead. The Minutewomen then tacked on two more goals in the frame to hold a 3-0 advantage after 15 minutes of play.

Columbia (0-1) registered two shots on goal in the opening quarter and Lions goalkeeper Katie Wimmer stopped two shots in goal. UMass added another goal later in the half with 3:41 until the break. Wimmer had seven saves in the first half.

After a scoreless third period, Nicole Campolattaro scored her first career goal in her collegiate debut and the first of the Lions' season with 5:03 left in the match.

Wimmer made 11 saves on the day, while Mckenzie Bloom and Campolattaro each tallied two shots on goal. Columbia had seven shots total, with the four from Bloom and Campolattaro coming on goal.

The Lions are back in action next Friday when they host LIU at 6 p.m. for their home opener.
