Lindsey Yu’s Goal in Double Overtime Gives Field Hockey Victory in Home Opener

Niki Miller earns first win as Columbia head coach

NEW YORK — Columbia field hockey won its fourth straight home opener thanks to a Lindsey Yu goal in the second overtime on Friday night to give the Lions a 1-0 victory over LIU.

After nearly 77 minutes of scoreless play, Yu cashed in off a penalty corner that was sent in from Delfina Gonzalez Lobo. It was Yu's first goal of the season. The senior captain also led the way with two shots of frame.

Lions head coach Niki Miller collected her first win as head coach in Morningside Heights. It was Columbia's first overtime win since Oct. 30, 2022.

"I couldn't be more excited about the team's gritty performance in double overtime in our home opener," Miller said. "It was a total team performance and I'm thrilled to get my first win as a Lion on our home field."

Columbia (1-1) was buzzing in the first overtime period, posting three shots. The Lions totaled three penalty corners in the overtime periods. Goalkeeper Katie Wimmer stopped all four shots on goal she faced in the match.

A quiet offensive half featured just two shots on goal for each side. Columbia's biggest scoring chance in regulation came with just over eight minutes until the half. Bloom rattled off a shot that resulted in a defensive save from LIU's backline.

Jacinta Solari Etcheberry and Lily Baker also tallied shots on goal for Columbia. The Lions out-shot the Sharks 12-8 (6-4 on goal).

Columbia is back home Sunday to host Bucknell at 1 p.m.
