8 AGAINST HATE
This weekend, the Ivy League is hosting its "8 Against Hate Weekend" at all athletic events across its eight campuses. The "8 Against Hate" initiative is a league-wide initiative that includes campus programming and support for student-athletes, coaches and staff. It promotes a consistent and unwavering message against all forms of discrimination and hate.
HYGIENE ESSENTIALS DRIVE
Columbia Athletics will be collaborating with the local nonprofit Harlem United to conduct a hygiene essentials drive. The drive benefits their shower program, which provides basic personal care supplies and access to safe showers for 3,000 New Yorkers each year. The Lions will be collecting travel-sized shampoos, 2-in-1 shampoos, bar soaps, body washes, shaving cream, deodorant, hair brushes, wide-tooth combs, toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss picks, lip balm and feminine hygiene products.
All those who donate at least three items will receive one complimentary ticket to a future Ivy League women's basketball game. Limit three (3) vouchers per person.
OPENING TIPS
• With Monday's 58-50 win over Princeton, the Lions are now 29-3 (.906) against league competition since the start of the 2022-23 season. That record is tops in the Ivy League over that span. Columbia is now alone in first place atop the league standings for the first time since the week of January 29, 2023, when they were 6-1. This marks just the second time in Columbia's 38-year history in the Ivy League that they are alone in first place.
• The Lions have won 18 straight home games, including a perfect 5-0 mark this season. Their last loss at home came November 14, 2023 against then-No. 22 Duke, 66-62.
• Columbia is on a six-game winning streak overall, its longest since winning a program-record 11 straight games from February 2 - March 15 of last season.
• Senior point guard Kitty Henderson averages 14.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 2.2 steals per game. She and Duquesne's Megan McConnell are the only two players in the country to average those minimums in each category. Henderson leads the Ivy League and ranks top 30 in the NCAA in assists per game (5.2). She ranks seventh in the Ivies in scoring, seventh in rebounding and second in steals. The senior co-captain from Australia has been named Ivy League Player of the Week a league-best three times this season (Nov. 11, Dec. 2, Dec. 30).
• Columbia ranks 15th in the NCAA in offensive rebounds per game (15.6) and top 50 in rebound margin (+6.1). Despite getting outrebounded in Monday's win over Princeton, the Lions have outrebounded their last six opponents by a combined 79 rebounds.
• The Lions are top 40 in the NCAA assists per game (17.0) and assist/turnover ratio (1.16). Henderson (5.2) and Collins (4.1) rank No. 1 and No. 2 in the Ivies in assists per game.
• Princeton's 50 points were its fewest scored against Columbia since February 27, 2004, when the Lions defeated the Tigers at Levien Gymnasium by a score of 48-45.
• Columbia came back from a double-digit halftime deficit to win for the first time since December 28, 2023 at San Francisco (W, 74-67). The Lions also trailed by 10 in the second half of that game.
• Columbia's 58 points were its fewest in a victory since defeating Princeton, 58-55, in overtime on January 6, 2023 at Jadwin Gym.
• Susie Rafiu had a career-high four steals.
• Kitty Henderson climbed to the No. 7 spot among Columbia's all-time leading scorers (1,186), No. 11 in rebounding (618), No. 2 in assists (433) and No. 5 in steals (154).
• Columbia won despite getting outshot 51.2% to 36.7%. According to research on Her Hoop Stats, that is the first time any NCAA women's basketball team has won a game in that scenario, or worse, since November 28, 2020, when Auburn beat Samford, 66-64. The Tigers shot 36.7 percent and overcame Samford's 52.1 percent.
• According to Her Hoop Stats, Princeton's 24 turnovers were its most against an Ivy League opponent since committing 25 in a 65-50 victory over Yale on January 30, 2016.
