Lions suffer second straight loss at home
NEW YORK – The Columbia women's basketball team fell to Saint Joseph's, 66-48, on Thursday from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium. Students from more than 20 New York City schools were in attendance for Columbia's 15th annual Education Day Game, with an announced crowd of 2,511.
Senior co-captain Susie Rafiu led the Lions in scoring with 14 points. Fellow senior co-captain Perri Page scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Riley Weiss rounded out the Lions in double figures, contributing 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.
The Lions (2-2) struggled from the field all game, going 33 percent from the floor and 0-for-14 from 3-point range. Columbia was also in heavy foul trouble, picking up 25 fouls that led to 24 free throw attempts for the Hawks (4-1). Weiss picked up her third and fourth fouls early in the third quarter, ultimately being limited to just 10 second-half minutes.
"I just think there is a lack of chemistry right now, and that's something that we have to keep working on," Columbia head coach Megan Griffith said. "There is no recipe for that other than putting the time in. We have a lot of people playing in new roles and, clearly, we're not comfortable yet in those roles. Now, we're going to see that evolve over time. We have to all be patient with that, unfortunately, and that's just part of it. That's part of the process."
After the Lions scored the first basket of the game, the Hawks took charge with a 9-0 run. The Lions turned it over 11 times in the quarter, trailing 15-6 after 10 minutes. They remained behind by 11, 33-22, at halftime.
With 4:27 left in the third, Page kicked off a 7-0 Lions run with an old-fashioned three-point play. Just as Columbia looked like they were right back in it, the Hawks responded with a 9-0 run and regained a 12-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Columbia got within eight a few times in the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as it got. The Lions were held to just one point over the final 3:15.
"All I can see is the growth we need to make," Griffith added. "It's not that we don't have talent, but talent doesn't just win – talent needs to work. That's what this team has to lean into and figure out. Their work this year is not going to be the work they've done in the past. It's going to be new work."
Saint Joseph's was led by a game-high 17 points from Gabby Casey. She connected on 3-of-6 from deep, adding five rebounds and three assists. Aleah Snead (16) and Rhian Stokes (14) completed a trio of double-figure scorers.
The Lions complete a three-game homestand on Monday when they host Binghamton (2-2) at 7 p.m.
