Lions force 30 turnovers with program Division I record 23 steals
RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Columbia women's basketball team raced out early and never looked back, crushing Manhattan, 84-38, Wednesday night at Draddy Gymnasium.
Columbia (5-4) scored the opening eight points and never trailed. Manhattan (0-8) cut it to 10-4, but the Lions scored the final 12 points of the quarter and the opening 12 of the second. All told, it was a 24-0 run that spanned 10 minutes, turning the contest into a laugher.
"We really wanted to have a dominant defensive effort today and just be tethered the entire time," said Columbia head coach Megan Griffith postgame. "I thought we did that. Third quarter, we were a little shaky, but I thought for 30 minutes we played a really solid defensive game."
Columbia's suffocating defense held Manhattan to 7.4 percent shooting (2-27) in the first half and forced 19 turnovers with 16 steals. The Jaspers burned three of their timeouts in an attempt to stop the bleeding, but to no avail. The Lions had a 20-3 advantage in points off turnovers and outscored Manhattan 26-0 in the paint over just 20 minutes.
Sophomore Nasi Simmons scored 10 of her career-high 12 points in the second quarter. Columbia led 45-10 at the intermission.
Manhattan played a much more competitive third quarter but only saw the deficit continue to increase. The Lions led by as many as 49 late in the fourth.
Columbia ended the night with 23 steals. It ties for the fourth-most steals in a game in program history, and is the most steals ever against a Division I opponent.
Senior Perri Page led all scorers with 15 points, adding eight rebounds and tying for the game-high with three steals. Simmons and junior Riley Weiss netted a dozen apiece. Sophomores Maria Arrebola (11) and Mia Broom (10) each hit double figures in scoring off the bench.
Senior Susie Rafiu led a dominating performance on the glass, grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Columbia finished +16 in rebounding.
Brianna Davis and Colette Mulderig had 10 points each to pace the Jaspers. They combined for 20 of their team's 38 points.
Columbia returns home to Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium for its next game, hosting Wagner (2-5) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
