EAST LANSING, Mich. — Columbia won its second straight USA Archery Recurve College Women's Team National Championship this past weekend at the 2025 USA Archery Collegiate Target Nationals. The year's event was held at the Hope Sports Complex in East Lansing, Michigan, hosted in partnership with Michigan State University and Lansing Sports Commission.
Senior
Judith Gottlieb, junior
Lillian Han and sophomore
Eunice Choi teamed up to win this year's recurve title. The trio ranked second in qualifying with a score of 1,826, earning a bye into the quarterfinals. They swept Michigan State in the quarters and took down Cumberlands in the semis, 5-1, for a matchup against top-seeded Texas A&M in the finals. Columbia edged out the Aggies in the first end, 50-48, and split the second end, 47-47, to head to the third end with a 3-1 lead. They closed out the match and the championship in dominant fashion, winning the third end, 57-41, to take the match, 5-1.
"This team is special. They showed this all season, but this weekend threw everything at them and they persevered," Columbia head coach
Derek Davis said. "From a six-hour flight delay that got us to the hotel at 4:20 a.m., to tornado sirens at midnight that forced us to retreat to the hotel laundry room on the second night, to cold, rainy, and extremely windy conditions... While I'm not surprised, I am still impressed. These women are why I love what I do."
The Lions were also represented in this year's compound team competition by junior
Sydney Sullenberger, junior
Giselle DeSousa and first-year
Briana Moore. They qualified fourth out of 10 teams, defeated Rio Grande in the quarterfinals but fell to Cumberlands in the semifinals. That put the Lions in the bronze-medal match, where they took home the hardware by defeating William Carey University, 212-196.
Additionally, Gottlieb teamed up with Columbia club archer Joshua Baek to win silver in mixed team curve.
Four Lions were named All-Americans, which included Choi, Gottlieb, Han and Sullenberger. Among the 10 recurve All-Americans across the country, Choi had the second-highest combined score (18.042) and Gottlieb ranked third (18.005). Among the 10 compound All-Americans, Sullenberger had the second-highest combined score (19.275). USA Archery determines its All-Americans by combining each archer's qualifying round scores from Indoor Nationals and Collegiate Target Nationals. There are 10 All-Americans named in both the Collegiate Compound Women and Collegiate Recurve Women.
At this weekend's individual competition, Columbia had three of the top-10 qualifiers in the 66-archer recurve field. Among them, Gottlieb and Choi advanced through to the quarterfinals but each of their respective runs came to an end there. On the compound side, Sullenberger qualified first out of 62 archers. She won her first two matchups before getting upset by 17th-seeded Kylee Brookover of Muskingum in the 1/8th Round in a shootoff.
