Baseball Shines in Summer Collegiate Leagues

The Lions excelled in summer ball, highlighted by All-Star selections and strong showings against elite competition.

NEW YORK —  Members of Columbia baseball made their mark across the country this summer, competing in some of the nation's top collegiate leagues — from the Cape Cod League to the West Coast. The Lions earned All-Star recognition, turned in standout performances at the plate and on the mound, and continued to showcase the program's talent.

Jack Kail capped off his summer in the prestigious Cape Cod League with the Wareham Gatemen, appearing in seven games. He began the season with the Wilson Tobs in the Coastal Plain League, where he made an immediate impact, hitting .299 with five doubles, a home run, 23 RBI and 16 stolen bases across 16 contests.

Cole Fellows earned NECBL All-Star honors after emerging as one of the top performers for the Upper Valley Nighthawks, who reached the postseason. The senior outfielder hit .329 with two home runs, four doubles and a team-high 31 RBI. On the mound, Will Harrigan and Baylor Hicks also suited up for Upper Valley, with Harrigan making six appearances and Hicks pitching in five contests.

Alex Sotiropoulos was a steady arm for the Bristol State Liners of the Appalachian League, going 3-3 with a 3.18 ERA in eight outings, striking out 18 in 22.2 innings.

In the Northwoods League, Tomas Lopez stood out in relief for the Green Bay Rockers, recording three saves and posting a 3.45 ERA across nine appearances. Behind the plate, Anthony Temesvary played in 25 games for the Minot Hot Togs, collecting five doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI. Teammate Evan Kleinhans logged 17 innings over five appearances.

Three Lions suited up for the Western Starfires. Justin Bowman pitched in 14 games and struck out 31 batters in 28 innings. Fellow left-hander Brendan Murphy made nine starts, fanning 36 across 43 innings. On the infield, Jimmy Chadwell appeared in 40 games, scoring 15 runs and driving in 16.

The Brooks Bombers of the Western Canadian League benefited from strong campaigns by outfielder Ben Fishel and pitcher Martin Zhang. Fishel led the club with a .378 average, adding five home runs, 26 RBI, 53 runs scored and 27 stolen bases. Zhang finished 2-2 with a 3.93 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 16 innings.

Catcher Owen Estabrook played 25 games for the Walla Walla Sweets in the West Coast League, hitting .265 with two home runs and 12 RBI. Joining him in the WCL was transfer outfielder Jack McWilliams, who appeared in 21 contests for the Wenatchee AppleSox, scoring 12 runs and notching a pair of extra-base hits.
