NEW YORK — Columbia baseball head coach Brett Boretti has announced the 2025 team awards that consist of Most Valuable Player, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, the Mr. Hustle Award, the Joseph Allen Award, and the Core Values Award.
Columbia went 30-19 (16-5) this year, captured its 17th Ivy League title and their eighth NCAA Tournament appearance. The Lions have now won eight Ivy League titles under Boretti, with seven of them coming since 2012.
Lou Gehrig Most Valuable Players: Sam Miller
Miller picked up ABCA/Rawlings All-Northeast Region First Team honors, was Ivy League Player of the Year and was named to the Hattiesburg All-Regional Team. The McMurray, Pennsylvania, native hit a team-best .338 and led the conference with 16 homers, 57 RBI and 50 runs scored in 49 starts.
Cy Young: Jagger Edwards
Edwards posted a 4-3 mark with a 5.13 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 13 starts. He pitched five shutout innings to help the Lions clinch the Ivy League regular season title at Harvard and earned a win against the Crimson to clinch Columbia's Ivy League Tournament Championship.
Rookie of the Year: Alex Sotiropoulos
Sotiropoulos appeared against every conference series and posted a 2.49 ERA in Ivy League play, good for fourth in the league. Overall, he went 5-3 with three saves and struck out 36 in 39.1 innings.
Mr. Hustle Award: Jack Kail
The Mr. Hustle Award exemplifies a player who always displays the most overall hustle on the field in practice and games.
Kail started all 49 games in the infield, batting .312 with 14 doubles, six homers and 45 RBI. He leads the Ivy League with five sacrifice flies and was stout defensively, committing just three errors on the season.
Joseph Allen Award: Joe Sheets
The Joseph Allen Award is presented annually to a member of the team who has made the greatest contribution in terms of inspirational leadership, sportsmanship, college loyalty, and service as a player.
Sheets, a two-time captain and two-time winner of this award, made 13 starts and won three games with 55 strikeouts in 64.2 innings of work.
Core Values Award: Griffin Palfrey
The Core Values Award is presented to the player that upholds the Columbia Baseball core values (family, character, passion, pride, and presence) more than any other player.
Palfrey was named All-Ivy League for the second consecutive season after hitting .261 with 17 doubles and 45 RBI, putting him in the top five in the conference in the latter two categories. A product of Vancouver, British Columbia, Palfrey broke Columbia's all-time RBI and dobules record. Additionally, he was named to the John Olerud National Two-Way Player of the Year Watch List in April and has seen action in eight contests on the hill.
