NEW YORK — First-year Maya Raphael scored the game-winning goal in the fourth quarter to lift Columbia to a 3-2 victory over LIU on Sunday at Columbia Field Hockey Complex.
Raphael broke a 2-2 tie with 7:21 remaining, finishing off a centering pass from Sam Petrucco to give the Lions (2-0) their second straight win to open the season. It was her first collegiate career goal.
Columbia struck first in the opening period on a penalty stroke conversion from Jacinta Solari Etcheberry, but LIU (0-3) answered with two goals in the second quarter from Tess Termars and Lotte Haagmans to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
The Lions pulled even early in the third when Mckenzie Bloom scored on a rebound, setting the stage for Raphael's decisive tally.
Columbia outshot LIU 26-7 (14-3 on goal) and held a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners. Goalkeeper Margot Houle recorded one save for the Lions in the win.
Columbia hosts Fairfield next Friday at 3 p.m. before traveling to Quinnipiac next Sunday for a 12 p.m. matchup.
