Women post 4-1 mark, men go 3-2 against some of the nation’s best
QUEENS, N.Y. — The Columbia fencing teams faced their stiffest competition yet at the St. John's Super Cup on Saturday. Each matchup was decided by seven or fewer bouts, with the women posting a 4-1 mark and the men going 3-2.
Individually, senior Zander Rhodes went 9-0 in women's foil, and Zeyad Nofal was 10-2 in men's foil.
The men (14-2 overall) dropped their first dual matchup of the season after the host Red Storm edged the Lions, 14-13, in the opening round. Rachael Kim and Katerina Lung went a combined 6-0 in women's foil, which proved to be the difference in a 14-13 decision against St. John's.
The women (16-1 overall) were on the right side of another one-bout matchup against Harvard. Angelina Yang's undefeated mark in women's sabre helped her weapon earn a 6-3 win to give Columbia the edge. The men bounced back with a 17-10 win over the Crimson. Epee gave the Lions some separation with a 7-2 advantage, aided by Julian Lim running the table.
Each squad won 17-10 over Ohio State in round three. Nofal and Jaden Callahan went 6-0 in men's sabre, while the trio of Rhodes, Evelyn Cheng and Sofia Gaydos ran the table in women's foil.
Against Princeton, the women earned their third 14-13 win of the day. Rhodes and Stuchbury posted unblemished marks in foil to lead the way. Epee and sabre earned weapon wins for the men in a 16-11 victory against the Tigers.
Notre Dame got the best of Columbia in the final round of the day. The women fell, 14-13, while the men were topped, 15-12.
The Lions return to the strips next Saturday, January 24, at the Penn State Invitational in their final tune-up before the Ivy League Round Robin Championships.
