Henderson records a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds
NEW YORK – The Columbia women's basketball team scored the game's first 13 points and finished on an 11-1 run to put away visiting Brown, 68-52, Monday afternoon from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
Columbia (12-5, 3-1 Ivy) led the entire way and forced 25 Bears turnovers. The Lions pushed their lead to as many as 18, but Brown (11-5, 3-1 Ivy) trimmed the deficit all the way down to four points in the fourth quarter. Columbia scored 11 straight to put the Bears away.
Fliss Henderson recorded her second double-double of the Ivy League season, going for 14 points, and game-highs of 13 rebounds and six assists. She scored Columbia's final seven points on the finishing run.
"Just wanting the ball the whole time … As soon as we constantly demand the ball in the post, it makes the game so much easier," Henderson told Lance Medow in her postgame interview on ESPN+. "That's what we were doing and that's how we took over in the end."
Riley Weiss led the team in scoring with 15 points and pulled down a season-best seven rebounds. Mia Broom and Perri Page rounded out the Lions in double figures, scoring 14 and 13, respectively.
With Monday's 15 points, Weiss now has 1,062 in her career. She passed her head coach for 11th on Columbia's all-time scoring list.
"I'm just happy she's rebounding," Lavine Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball Megan Griffith quipped when asked about it postgame. "We have a lot of really talented players that are starting to trust each other, trust the play call, and just trust the system. That's what great teams do. There is a lot of trust and team chemistry that's built up over the course of the year. We didn't have that to start … but we're figuring it out. This player leadership that we want to lean into, you're seeing it first-hand right now."
Debuting their exclusive New York City and Columbia-inspired look, the Lions got straight to business. Page scored right off the opening tip, and the Lions went up 8-0 in the first 63 seconds. After three straight turnovers, Brown called a timeout, but the Lions extended their run to 13-0. The Bears went without any made field goals until the 5:27 mark and finished the first quarter 2-of-11. Columbia took a 24-10 lead to the second.
The game slowed down in the second quarter. Columbia pushed its lead to 34-16 but then went scoreless for the last 4:59 of the half. The Lions forced nine Brown turnovers, preventing the Bears from getting too many shots up. Brown still closed the half on an 8-0 run and, after a buzzer-beating three that banked in from Grace Arnolie, the lead was trimmed to 10. Arnolie led all scorers with 21 points on the afternoon.
Brown made its first foray back into single digits early in the third quarter. Broom ended a 10-minute Columbia scoring drought between periods by knocking down one of her four threes. She ended the game 4-of-5 from deep and tied her career-high in scoring.
Foul trouble caught up with the Lions. They were whistled for 14 fouls in the first half and 26 in the game overall. Four Lions had at least three fouls late in the third quarter and Feldrappe fouled out before the start of the fourth. Page, who was limited to just four minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, had to come back in with four fouls but played the final 11 minutes without fouling. Her 13 points, five rebounds and two blocks came in less than 17 minutes.
Columbia closes out a three-game homestand next Saturday against Dartmouth (9-8, 0-4 Ivy) at 2 p.m.
