Tallied a program-record 10 steals in double-double performance
NEW YORK – Columbia women's basketball sophomore guard Nasi Simmons has been named to the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Ann Meyers Drysdale Women's National Players of the Week. The USBWA selects five players for its weekly honors.
This week's honors cover games played January 12-18. The five players selected were Simmons, Georgia's Dani Carnegie, Syracuse's Dominique Davis, Oklahoma State's Stailee Heard, and Iowa's Hannah Stuelke.
In Columbia's lone game covering the week of Jan. 12-18, Simmons came off the bench and logged a program-record 10 steals as part of an 85-58 victory over Yale. Six of those steals came in the third quarter alone, which is also a program record for steals in a quarter. She finished the game with a double-double of 10 points and 10 steals, adding three rebounds, one assist and one block.
Simmons's 10-steal game was the first by an Ivy League player since Ania McNicholas (Cornell) had 10 steals as part of a triple-double in a 93-49 win over NCAA Div. II Clarion on Dec. 28, 2022. It is the first 10-steal game by an Ivy League player against a Div. I opponent since Carlie Littlefield (Princeton) had 10 in a 75-50 win over George Washington on Nov. 10, 2019.
Simmons's double-double with steals is just the 10th by an NCAA Div. I player this season. Of those 10 double-doubles, only Simmons and Georgia State's Grace Lanier have done it off the bench.
Columbia (12-5, 3-1 Ivy) completes a three-game homestand on Saturday against Dartmouth (9-8, 0-4 Ivy). Tip-off from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
