10-person midseason watch list announced
HOPEWELL, N.J. – Lavine Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball Megan Griffith has been named to the 10-person midseason watch list for the 2026 Kathy Delaney-Smith Mid-Major Coach of the Year Award presented by Her Hoop Stats. Now in its third year of existence, the award recognizes the best mid-major coach in Women's Division I college basketball.
So far this season, Columbia boasts a 13-5 overall record with a 4-1 mark in Ivy League play. Griffith's Lions have quality wins over South Dakota State (NET 44) and Seton Hall (NET 49), along with a third top 75 NET win at Harvard (NET 66). The Lions are currently situated at No. 59 in the latest NET rankings, and travel to face AP No. 19 Princeton (NET 40) on Friday, followed by Penn (NET 119) on Saturday.
Griffith was a finalist for last year's Kathy Delaney-Smith Mid-Major Coach of the Year Award. She was also a finalist for the 2024-25 WBCA National Coach of the Year, named the Ivy League Coach of the Year for a third straight season, named the Coach of the Year by the Asian Coaches Association, and also named the Met Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Women's Division I Coach of the Year.
Since returning to her alma mater in 2016, Griffith has transformed Columbia into a perennial Ivy League powerhouse and national contender. After having just one winning season over its first 34 years as a Division I program, Columbia has now won three straight Ivy League Championships and been to four consecutive postseason tournaments under Griffith, including the WNIT Championship game in 2023, and the NCAA Tournament in both 2024 and 2025.
Award Eligibility & Schedule
To be eligible for the award, coaches must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be "mid-major." The following conferences are considered high-major for the purposes of this award and thus ineligible: ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, and SEC. Additionally, Oregon State and Washington State remain ineligible this season as membership in the Pac-12 Conference evolves. Interim head coaches are eligible, though total games coached were taken into consideration.
The 10-person midseason watch list will be announced in January. The five finalists for the award will be announced in March, with the winner being named around the Final Four. Coaches will be assessed across the entire season, including postseason play. Beyond on-court success, other factors such as recruiting, preseason expectations, injuries, and tactical coaching will also be weighed when assessing each candidate. Inclusion on previous watch lists is not a requirement to be considered for future watch lists.
