A LOOK BACK...
Columbia posted its second straight home shutout with a 16-0 victory over Marist on October 7, 2023. Columbia held the Red Foxes to 34 rushing yards, forced four turnovers and were 4-for-4 in stopping Marist in the red zone to improve their national-leading mark in that category. Aaron Brebnor had a pair of interceptions and Reid Spachman registered 2.5 tackles for a loss.
Offensively, the Lions racked up 222 rushing yards. Ty'son Edwards eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the first time with 105 and added a pair of touchdowns. Joey Giorgi posted 83 yards on 15 carries and quarterback Caden Bell added 67, including a game-long 35 run.
Despite a couple of Columbia fumbles in the second quarter, the defense kept Marist off the board and remained in control before two more scoring possessions to end the second quarter. Two big runs by Giorgi of 17 and 11 yards helped put the Lions into the red zone again to set up a field goal try. First-year Hugo Merry fought through the rain and a gust of wind to connect from 40 yards to extend the margin to 9-0 with 6:26 left in the first half. After another quick stop, Edwards struck again with time winding down in the second after he found the endzone from 22 yards out to make it 16-0 at the midway point.
Marist had the ball inside the Columbia 40 four times in the second half, and each time, the Lions were up to the task and were a perfect 4-for-4 on the Red Foxes' fourth down attempts. Marist had first and goal from the 10 with time running out and forced four incompletions to preserve the shutout.
SERIES HISTORY
• Friday marks the eighth meeting between Columbia and Marist all-time. The series started in 2007 with a 31-7 Columbia win.
• Columbia holds a perfect 7-0 record in series after a 16-0 win at Wien Stadium in 2023.
• Saturday will be the third game of the series played in Poughkeepsie.
CHASE IS ON THE CASE
Senior Chase Goodwin is off to a solid start to his final campaign, leading the Ivy League in passing yards (975) and completions (83). His 325 yards per game and 27.7 completions per game are also No. 2 in the FCS.
He began the year going 25-of-39 for a career-high 367 yards and two touchdowns in Columbia's win over Lafayette.
Goodwin moved into a tie for 15th place with 20 career passing touchdowns after tossing one to Bryce Coleman against Princeton. He currently ranks third in career completion percentage (58.6 percent), No. 11 in completions (272) and No. 13 in passing yards (3,133). He is just the 14th Lion quarterback to eclipse 3,000 career yards.
The Houston native threw for 1,269 yards and nine touchdowns in seven contests last season.
In 2024, he became the first Lion to throw for over 300 yards in a game since 2017 after racking up 334 with a pair of touchdowns at Penn on his way to Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week honors. Goodwin also saw action in five games in 2023, serving as the Lions' short-yardage QB.
