Columbia improves to 4-0 all-time against Big Ten foe

NEW YORK — Columbia women's tennis continued its strong start to the spring season Saturday, sweeping Michigan State, 4-0, at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
The Lions (5-2) secured the doubles point and captured three straight singles matches in straight sets to clinch the victory.

Columbia took control early in doubles play. The tandem of Emily Baek and Sophia Wang set the tone with a 6-3 win over Nina Plihal and Issey Purser at No. 3. Moments later, Michelle Li and Amber Yin sealed the doubles point with a 6-3 decision against Amara Brahmbhatt and Oriana Parkins-Godwin at No. 2. The No. 1 match featuring Gayathri Krishnan and Sabrina Lin was left unfinished at 3-4.

Carrying the momentum into singles, the Lions wasted little time extending their advantage.

Yin delivered the first singles point, dominating Issey Purser, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 to give Columbia a 2-0 lead. Krishnan followed at the top spot with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 victory over Amara Brahmbhatt.

Emily Baek clinched the match at No. 3, earning a 6-3, 6-4 win against Matilde Morais to secure the 4-0 final.

Three additional singles contests went unfinished after the match was decided. Michelle Li claimed a tightly contested first set in a tiebreak before play was halted at 7-6, 1-1 at No. 4. At No. 2, Sophia Wang was locked in a battle, trailing 4-6, 3-2, while Margaret Hui split sets at No. 5 and trailed in the third when competition concluded.

Columbia returns to action on Wednesday, February 25, when it hosts FDU. That match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
