NEW YORK — The Columbia women's golf team is in third place after an impressive first two rounds at the Space Coast Classic, presented by Moon Golf. The opening 36 holes of the event were contested on Saturday at Duran Golf Club.
For the second time this academic year, the Lions broke the program's single-round scoring record. This time, it was Kristina Xu, Sarah Shao, Emily Zeng, Bridget Chantharath and Christine Chang, who combined to shoot a second-round 6-under-par 282. It broke the previous record of 2-under 286 that the Lions posted in September at the Windy City Collegiate Classic.
Xu highlighted the record-breaking second round with a 5-under 67, which is the second-lowest individual round in program history. She carded six birdies and just a single bogey, including a closing birdie at the par-4 18th to finish off the 67. It's the lowest individual round shot by a Lion since Michelle Piyapattra's 65 at the 2012 Nittany Lion Invitational.
Xu is tied for third on the individual leaderboard at 4-under for the tournament. Sarah Shao, who posted an even-par 72 and a 1-under 71, is tied for eighth at 1-under. Emily Zeng is 13th at 1-over. Just 10 individuals in the 78-player field are under par.
As a team, the Lions (+2) are just two shots back of second-place Notre Dame (E) and six shots back of 36-hole leader Dartmouth (-4). The Big Green shot an opening 10-over-par team round and improved by 24 shots in Round 2 with a 14-under 274.
The Lions also have a B team competing. Highlighting the group is senior Yoko Tai, who is currently inside the top 25 at 5-over par.
Sunday's final round will be streamed live on YouTube courtesy of CGN Plus. Coverage begins at 8:30 a.m., and will feature all golfers coming up Duran Golf Club's 18th hole.
