Columbia wraps up nonconference play with road win over FIU
MIAMI — The 51st-ranked Columbia women's team battled the elements and host FIU en route to a 4-1 win on Wednesday afternoon at the PayCargo Center.
Columbia (10-3) quickly took the doubles point thanks to an FIU (3-7) forfeit on court three. Columbia's duo of Gayathri Krishnan and Sabrina Lin cliched it with a lopsided 6-1 win over the duo of Viktorie Hazmukova and Aleksandra Simeva.
On court two, the Lions' pair of Emily Baek and Sophia Wang led 5-1 over Jelena Vico and Maria Araoz-Gosn when the match was unfinished.
After a lengthy two-hour weather delay, singles play began with Columbia already leading 2-0 thanks to a forfeit on court six.
Krishnan won her ninth match of the spring with a straight-sets win over Jelena Vico, 6-3, 6-2, to give the Lions a 3-0 advantage.
FIU made it 3-1 when Vittoria Baccino defeated Want 6-2, 6-3 on court two. Emily Baek quickly regained the Lions' momentum, winning 6-3, 6-4 over Maria Araoz-Gosn on court three. It was Baek's third win in the last four matches playing at the No. 3 spot for Columbia.
Michelle Li and Amber Yin were both in the third set when their respective matches went unfinished. Li rallied back to take the second set 6-3 after falling to Viktorie Hazmukova 4-6 in the first.
Yin won her opening set 6-2 before falling to Simeva 4-6 in the second set. Yin was leading 1-0 when the match went unfinished.
