Lions take down Marshall and Wanger to improve to 6-0 at home
NEW YORK – The 54th-ranked Columbia women's tennis stayed perfect at home, beating Marshall and Wagner in a Saturday doubleheader at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
Columbia cruised past Marshall 4-0 to start the day before defeating Wagner 4-0 to improve to 8-3 overall this season. With today's two wins, Columbia now owns a 7-match home win streak dating back to last season.
COLUMBIA VS. MARSHALL RECAP
Columbia continued its strong doubles play this season by winning the one, two, and three doubles matches to take an early lead over Marshall. The duo of Michelle Li and Amber Yin posted a 6-3 victory over Polina Gumeniuk and Sarah Copley in the two spot. Gayathri Krishnan and Sabrina Lin followed that up with a 6-4 win against Alina Mokrynska and Johanna Strom in the 1-seed to secure the doubles point for Columbia.
Emily Baek and Sophia Wang defeated Paula Berzina and Nour El Ouazzani 6-3 in the three-seed doubles match to claim all three contests for the Lions.
Columbia continued to perform well in singles action, securing three straight-set victories to cement a 4-0 overall victory. Michelle Li put Columbia up 2-0 as she defeated Sarah Copley 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 4 singles. Sophia Wang followed suit by securing the two-seed singles with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Margaret Hui clinched the match for the Lions, as she took down Nour El Ouazzani in a close competition, winning by a final score of 7-5, 7-5.
The remaining matches were all tight affairs. Amber Yin came out strong and was on the verge of an entertaining three-set victory in the six-seed when her match went final at 6-3, 2-6, 5-3.
Gayathri Krishnan was in a competitive three-set contest with Johanna Strom in the 1-seed, going final at 6-4, 3-6, 2-2. In the three spot, Emily Baek and Alina Mokrynska were also locked in a tight battle, finishing 4-6, 6-6.
COLUMBIA VS. WAGNER RECAP
The Lions dominated the back side of Friday's doubleheader with a quick 4-0 win against Wagner. Columbia claimed the doubles point to get the contest started. Michelle Li and Amber Yin cruised to victory in the 2-seed match, winning 6-0. Emily Baek and Sophia Wang worked together to claim a 6-2 victory in the third spot, securing the doubles point for the Lions. Gayathri Krishnan and Sabrina Lin also led 5-2 in the No. 1 doubles.
The Lions were in complete control heading into singles play. Emily Baek, Margaret Hui, and Sabrina Lin registered singles victories in straight sets to cap off the afternoon. Baek rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Samantha Bentsianov in the No. 3 singles for Columbia's first singles victory. Hui followed that with a shutout 6-0, 6-0 win against Dariana Vera in the fifth spot. Lin followed suit and clinched the Columbia shutout with a 6-0, 6-0 performance in the six-seed singles against Claudia Lindsey.
Gayathri Krishnan, Sophia Wang and Michelle Li all won the first set of their matches in singles action. Those matches went unfinished as the Lions clinched the 4-0 victory.
