
No. 54 Women’s Tennis Makes Quick Work of Highlanders

Lions extend winning streak to three matches
NEW YORK – The 54th-ranked Columbia women's tennis team made quick work of visiting NJIT, defeating the Highlanders 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
With the win, Columbia improves to 9-3 on the year and 7-0 at home.
The Lions seized the momentum early, securing the doubles point by quickly dispatching the Highlanders. Columbia's 2-seed pairing of Michelle Li and Amber Yin cruised to a 6-1 victory over Paula Menendez Alvarez and Lusia Hepcal Barcan. Meanwhile, the number three tandem of Emily Baek and Sophia Wang also soundly defeated NJIT's duo of Diana Fernandes and Petra Koszo 6-1.
On court one, the Lions' duo of Gayathri Krishnan and Sabrina Lin were tied 4-4 with Irene Cocero and Laura Wipfli when the match was halted.
In singles play, the Lions clinched the match with a series of straight-set victories. Amber Yin gave the Lions a 2-0 lead when she defeated Lusia Hepcal Barcan 6-2, 6-1. Gayathri Krishnan followed suit in the one spot with another dominating 6-2, 6-1 performance, this time over Laura Wipfli.
Michelle Li clinched the match with an impressive 6-2, 6-0 win over Asima Sazan, giving the Lions a 4-0 overall victory.
Sophia Wang, Emily Baek, and Margaret Hui all won their first sets and were leading in their respective matches when the duel was finished.
Columbia returns to action on March 18th when they travel to take on FIU in Miami. That match is scheduled for a noon first serve.
