Lions cap off undefeated home season with win on Senior Day
NEW YORK – The 61st-ranked Columbia women's tennis team continued their hot start to Ivy League play, defeating the visiting Penn Quakers 4-0 on Friday afternoon at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center to become 4-0 in conference play.
With the win, Columbia stretched their win streak to 8 and improved to 14-3 on the year. The Lions finished the season with a perfect 11-0 record at home, the first undefeated home season since 2023-24.
Prior to the match, Columbia honored senior Sophia Wang for all her contributions to the program as a three year starter.
The Lions seized the momentum early, securing the doubles point by quickly dispatching the Quakers. Columbia's 1-seed pairing of Gayathri Krishnan and Sabrina Lin battled back from an early break down to secure the 6-4 victory over Lara Stojanovski and Esha Velaga. Meanwhile, the number three tandem of Emily Baek and Sophia Wang soundly defeated the Penn duo of Sasha Motlagh and Liza Tkachenko 6-2.
On court two, the Lions' duo of Michelle Li and Amber Yin were tied 5-5 with Maya Urata and Joleen Saw when the match was halted.
In singles play, the Lions clinched the match with a series of straight-set victories. Michelle Li gave the Lions a 2-0 lead when she defeated Varsha Vedula 6-2, 6-2 in the five seed. Emily Baek followed suit in the two spot with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Lara Stojanovski.
