SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — The Columbia women's golf team will have an opportunity to win its first Ivy League Championship in nearly two decades on Sunday. The Lions battled through Saturday's cold, wet and windy second-round conditions at Baltusrol Golf Club, and find themselves in second place, just two shots back of 36-hole leader Harvard.
The individual scoring average jumped by more than three shots from Friday's picturesque conditions to a cold and rainy Saturday. Columbia (+34) didn't waver, posting a second-round team score of 311, keeping pace with Harvard (+32) and leapfrogging Princeton (+40) for second. The first-round leaders fell all the way to fourth with a team round of 32-over-par 320. Penn (+39) now occupies third.
Sophomore Sarah Shao shot a 4-over-par 76 to tie for the low tournament round of the day. She now leads the championship in par-4 scoring (+3) and is second in par-5 scoring (-3). Shao (+5) is solo second on the individual leaderboard, two shots behind 36-hole leader Thanana Kotchasanmanee (+3) of Princeton.
Shao's 76 was bolstered by a pair of 78s from first year Kristina Xu and sophomore Christine Chang, as well as a 79 from first year Camille Thai. All four of Columbia's counting scores were below the 80.37 Saturday scoring average. Xu (+8) and Thai (+9) are among the top 10 on the leaderboard. Chang (+12) is tied for 16th.
Second-place Columbia will play in threesomes alongside first-place Harvard and third-place Penn for Sunday's final round. The first tee time for those groupings will be at approximately 11:10 a.m.
