Two Columbia Alums Advance to Match Play at U.S. Women’s Mid-Am

Florio, Wang begin match play Monday afternoon
NEW YORK — Columbia University alumnae Alexis Florio '22CC and Jennifer Wang '22CC have advanced to match play at the 39th USGA Women's Mid-Amateur Championship. The two Columbia women's golf graduates are each playing in the event for the second consecutive year.
This year's championship is being hosted at Montclair Golf Club in West Orange, New Jersey. The 132-player field was cut to the top 64 and ties following two rounds of stroke play over the weekend. The eight players who are tied for 61st will compete in a playoff on Monday morning to finalize the 64-player bracket.
"Playing in USGA championships is an important part of our program at Columbia," said Columbia women's golf head coach Amy Weeks, who guided the Lions to the 2026 Ivy League Championship at Baltusrol. "We are so proud of the golf culture that has continued to thrive from the program."
Florio, who graduated in 2022 and ranked No. 2 in school history in career low scoring average, tied for 16th over the weekend in stroke play. She posted the lowest score of Saturday's first-round morning wave of 1-over 71. After making the turn at 2-over par, she carded a bogey-free 1-under over her final nine, including a birdie on the 353-yard par-4 fourth. She then coasted into match play with a 6-over-par 76 on Sunday, ending the weekend 7-over par.
"I know the course is really difficult, especially the greens," Florio told the USGA in her post-round interview on Saturday. "I wasn't trying to go out and make a ton of birdies. Par is going to be good, and [you need to] stay patient for when the birdies come."
Wang, a two-time First Team All-Ivy League selection, qualified for this year's Mid-Am by virtue of her quarterfinal finish in last year's event. After posting a 10-over 80 in Round 1 on Saturday, Wang bounced back in a big way. She carded three birdies and four bogeys on Sunday to shoot a 1-over 71 and move up the leaderboard into a tie for 40th at 11 over. The cut was 14 over.
Another graduate of Columbia women's golf, Amy Ding '19CC, made her second appearance at the USGA U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship. The two-time William Terminello Award winner secured her spot with a 3-over-par 75 at the Knickerbocker Country Club qualifier in July. Ding shot back-to-back rounds of 8-over-par 78 during weekend stroke play, missing the cut by two strokes.
Following the playoff to finalize the field Monday morning, match play begins Monday afternoon with the Round of 64. Two rounds are scheduled for Tuesday, the Round of 32 in the morning and the Round of 16 in the evening. The quarterfinals and semifinals will take place on Wednesday. The two finalists will meet in the 18-hole championship match on Thursday.
