Women’s Rowing Posts Strong Showing at Eastern Sprints

The Lions reached four Grand Finals and earned a Petite Final victory from the Second Varsity Eight
WORCESTER, Mass. — Columbia women's rowing turned in a strong performance Sunday at the Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond, highlighted by a second place finish in the Varsity Eight Grand Final and third place finish in the Varsity 4B Grand Final.
The Lions' Varsity Eight crew placed second in the Grand Final with a time of 6:15.717 after advancing through the morning heats with a first place finish in the third heat. Brown captured the Grand Final title in 6:12.109. The Varsity Eight came off the line in second and held that place, extended the margin on the field as they chased Brown to the line.
"The result was the sum of their efforts," said head coach Emerson Curry.
Columbia's Third Varsity Eight reached the Grand Final after winning its morning heat in 6:41.933. The Lions ultimately finished fourth in the final in 6:45.488, trailing Rutgers, Dartmouth and Radcliffe.
In the Varsity 4B competition, Columbia earned third in the Grand Final with a time of 7:23.710. The crew dropped back as far as fifth place in the first 500 before walking through Brown then Harvard then Northeastern to finish third. The Lions advanced after placing second in their heat earlier in the morning.
Columbia's Varsity 4A also qualified for the Grand Final and finished fifth overall in 7:25.559 after a runner-up showing in the heats.
The Lions' Second Varsity Eight crew competed in the Petite Final and earned the victory with a time of 6:42.504, finishing ahead of UMass, Cornell and Boston College.
