Johnson Leads Men’s Golf at the Macdonald Cup

Event shortened to 18 holes due to inclement weather
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Columbia men's golf sophomore Sam Johnson finished tied for 12th to lead the Lions at the 48th Macdonald Cup. The tournament, originally scheduled for 54 holes, was shortened to just a single round due to inclement weather brought on by a nor'easter impacting the region.
The first and only round of the tournament was held on Friday at Yale Golf Course. Johnson shot a 4-over-par 74, carding four birdies, five bogeys and a lone double at the par-4 14th. His 12th-place finish is a career best, as well as his second career top-20.
Three more Lions finished tied for 21st, each shooting rounds of 75. The trio consisted of junior Ryan Keyes, sophomore Neil Kulkarni and first-year Tom Yu. Keyes tallied his third career top-25, Kulkarni tallied his ninth, and Yu earned his second straight top-25 to begin his collegiate career. Another notable was sophomore Alejandro Formosa, who shot a 76 and finished in the top 30.
Columbia finished sixth in the 11-team field at 21-over par, two shots clear of Davidson (+23) and Yale (+23). Harvard took the single-round win at 9-over par.
The Lions make their annual trip to Lake Placid, New York, for the Columbia Autumn Invitational next weekend, October 3-4. The 54-hole event will take place at the Links Course at Lake Placid Club.
