ATHENS (August 23, 2004) -- Taking the lead on the second 500-meter leg, the United States pair of Stacey Borgman and Lisa Schlenker led comfortably from the halfway point in winning the B Final of the Olympic Women's Lightweight Double Sculls at Greece's Schinias Olympic Rowing Centre. Borgman, a 1998 Barnard graduate, and Schlenker were second to Great Britain after 500 meters of the 2000-meter, six-nation race. However, they turned in a 1:51.92 clocking on the second leg, fastest of any boat, to move into first place at the halfway point. Their 3:40.31 time led the Britons by .82 seconds, and third-place Canada by 1:12 seconds. The U.S. duo continued to pour it on in the second half of the race, turning in the best splits in each 500-meter leg, enroute to victory in 7:23.40. Canada took second in 7:26.07, followed by Great Britain, Denmark, Spain, and Greece. With the victory, the U.S. boat finished seventh overall. Upon her return to the U.S., Borgman, who comes from Homer, Alaska, will re-enter Lewis & Clark University Law School in Portland, Ore., where she has just one year to go for her degree.
