Matt Hamme is in
his fifth season at Columbia, and third as an assistant coach. Hamme spent last season as a defensive
assistant, and will coach linebackers in 2011.
Hamme joined the
Columbia staff in 2007, as the as coordinator of video services, a multifaceted
position that includes implementing the complex computerized video analysis
systems that have become common in college and professional football. He took
the position after spending a season as an assistant coach at the United States
Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, Long Island.
Hamme coached
the outside linebackers and punt return team at the Merchant Marine Academy. He
was responsible for running individual practice, assisting in weekly game
planning and recruiting. He also handled all video operations.
Hamme is the
only native New Yorker in the Columbia football program. Raised on Manhattan's
Upper East Side, he attended Avon Old Farms School in Connecticut and Western
Reserve Academy in Ohio before matriculating at the SUNY University at Albany.
He played quarterback for one season for the Great Danes, and then became the
student assistant for defensive backs. As the student assistant, he was
responsible for coordinating meetings and analyzing practice films, among other
duties.
Hamme played
four years of lacrosse at Albany. His team won both the America East Conference
regular-season and tournament championships. A midfielder, Hamme was named to
the Athletic Academic Honor Roll and the America East Academic Honor Roll.
He graduated
from Albany in 2004 and holds a master's degree from Columbia in Sports
Management. Hamme lives on Morningside Heights, near the Columbia campus.
