Andrew Hess, who spent 6 seasons as an associate head coach of lightweight rowing at Columbia University, joined the Columbia heavyweight staff as an assistant coach as of September 2022.
As an associate head coach, Hess helped the Columbia Lightweights win two IRA National Championships, an Eastern Sprints championship, an IRA team points championship, and an Eastern Sprints team points championship. During his tenure the team saw the second varsity 8 win two Eastern Sprints Championships, and one championship in the third varsity eight event. Hess also served as the team’s recruiting coordinator.Â
Hess spent two years as a boat coach with the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team, as well as a year as a senior coach for the Men’s Single event at the 2022 World Championships. Prior to this he was the head coach at the New York Athletic Club, assistant coach at Community Rowing Inc., and an assistant coach at the Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club.Â
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Hess is a 2012 graduate of Xavier University. He holds an MBA from Xavier University and a Master’s degree in biobehavioral sciences from Columbia University. His research at Columbia is in contextual interference in elite endurance athletes.Â
