Jillian Schwartz joined the Columbia track & field program in August of 2008, as a volunteer assistant coach. One of the top pole-vaulters in the world, she has been a member of seven national teams, and has continued to compete internationally with USA Track & Field. Schwartz made her first Olympic team with her runner-up finish at the 2004 Olympic Trials. She is a three-time US National Championships runner-up outdoors, and three-time runner-up in USA Indoors. After placing second at the 2004 USA Indoors, she had a career best at 2004 World Indoors clearing 4.60m/15-1 to set a personal best, becoming the fifth American woman ever to clear 15 feet, and placed fourth overall at the event. In the summer of 2008, she set a new personal record, as she jumped 4.73m/15-6.
The 2001 graduate of Duke is one of the most decorated athletes to come out of the track & field program. A three-time All-American, four-time All-ACC honoree, and a two-time ACC conference champion, Schwartz holds the Duke records for both indoor (13’5.25”) and outdoor pole vault (14’2”). In 1999, Schwartz was honored as the Most Valuable Athlete award for Duke women’s track & field. She was the only Blue Devil named to the ACC 50th Anniversary Women’s Indoor Track & Field Team, and her 1999 ECAC individual title was the first ever by a Duke woman.
