STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Senior Jana Whiting (Halifax, Mass.) scored two goals and first-year Jenny Brandt (Scarsdale, N.Y.) tallied another to lift Columbia to a 3-0 victory on the road against Wagner.
In a match in which Columbia (3-2-1) outshot the Seahawks 21-4, the Lions had multiple early chances. In the fourth minute, Brandt's shot hit the post but two minutes later, Whiting's blast from 15 found the back of the net to give Columbia a 1-0 edge at the 5:07 mark.
After Whiting hit the post with a shot in the 13th minute, she found the back of the net again six minutes later. Junior Meghan Hurlbut (McLean, Va.) crossed a ball into the box that Whiting sent home for her second goal of the day and third on the season, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead with 19:16 having gone by in the first half.
First-year Allison Leonard (Seattle, Wash.) had a chance to make it 3-0 in the first half, but she also had a shot hit the post in the 37th minute. For the half, Columbia outshot Wagner 11-3 and had five corner kicks.
Despite 10 shots in the second half, the Lions' lead remained 2-0 until the final minute of regulation when Brandt put home her third goal of the season to make the final score 3-0.
Sophomore Allison Vespa (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) stopped two shots for her second straight win and third of the season. Leslie Reed stopped eight shots for Wagner (0-4). The win also marked Columbia's first shutout victory of the season.
Next up for Columbia is a home match against American at Columbia Soccer Stadium on Sunday, September 18. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
