NEW YORK ? Columbia swept the top three places in five races to defeat Wagner, 179-83, at Uris Pool. For the Lions, it was their second meet in 16 hours.
Columbia (3-3) had three double-winners, two of whom were first-years. Sophomore sprinter Hannah Galey was first in both the 50 free (24.61) and 100 individual medley (1:00.47) in a meet mainly made up of races of abbreviated distances. First-year Delghi Urubshurow won the 400 individual medley and 100 back in 4:35.79 and 59.59, respectively, and classmate Allison Hobbs touched first in the 50 breast (32.67) and 50 fly (26.86).
Head coach Diana Caskey was pleased the team was able to rebound from a loss at Penn the previous evening. “Coming off a somewhat difficult meet at Penn, we were happy to be back in our pool, and race the way we know we can,” Caskey said. “We put up a lot of good performances.”
The meet was composed of 14 swim events with no diving, and the Lions were first in 10 of the races.
The team opened the meet by taking both first and second in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Lauren Fraley, Amy Krakauer, Hobbs and Tina Hughes was fastest in a time of 1:50.11. Columbia's relays also had a strong showing in the final event of the afternoon, the 400 free relay; Columbia took each of the top three positions. Hughes, Urubshurow, Mary McCue and Galey was six seconds ahead of the Columbia ?B' team in 3:38.65.
Other event-winners for the Lions included Fraley in the 50 back in 28.32 and Sarah Fisher in the 100 fly in 1:00.20.
For Wagner (6-5), Brigitta Roser won both the 100 and 200 free events.
