DiCrescenzo, running unattached, covered the 6000-meter course in 20:31, two seconds ahead of Julie Culley.
According to DiCrescenzo, the poor course conditions had little impact on her.
“The conditions were tough, but I felt like I was suited for the course with the way I run. I didn't slide as much in the mud. I was surprised at how well I felt, given the course conditions. I just tried to stay patient until the last quarter.”
DiCrescenzo, who finished 11th in last year's race, broke away from the pack around the two-mile mark. “Nobody really wanted to push the pace, and I was pretty confident with my speed, so I was just biding my time until the end.”
With the Grammy nominated hit song “Hey There Delilah” blasting from the speakers, it was only fitting that DiCrescenzo pulled away in the final stretch securing her first place finish. The writer of the song, Tom Higgenson of the Plain White T's, has attributed DiCrescenzo as the inspiration for the pop single.
DiCrescenzo is now an assistant track and cross-country coach at Bryn Mawr.
