
Men's Swimming & Diving Falls to Penn in Season Opener, 161-139

NEW YORK - The Columbia men's swimming & diving team lost its first dual meet of the 2009-10 season Friday in Philadelphia, Pa., as the Lions were downed by Penn, 161-139.
Columbia opened the meet with a strong showing, as the 200 medley relay squad of Johnny Bailey, Eric Tang, Bruno Esquen and Adam Powell took first place, with a time of 1:33.91. But the Quakers answered with a 1-2 finish in the 1000 free, taking the early lead.
Sophomore Chester Dols was the top finisher for Columbia in the event, as he finished third in a time of 9:43.50. The Quakers widened the lead in the 200 free, as Penn went 1-2-3, but Columbia answered with a win by first-year Patrick Dougherty in the 100 back. Dougherty, who finished just tenths of a second ahead of Penn's Matt Krey, won the event with a time of 52.42, just ahead of Kray's 52.82. Senior Darren Pagan finished third in the race, with a time of 53.03.
It was the first of two events that Dougherty would win that night, as he also placed first in the 200 back, with a time of 1:54.68. Pagan was just behind him in that event as well, placing second with a time of 1:54.75.
Seniors Ross Ramone and Eric Tang went 2-3 in the 100 breast, with times of 59.11 and 59.26, and did the same in the 200 breast, as Ramone came in second in 2:07.95, and Tang came in third at 2:10.29.
Sophomore Robert Eyckamns earned another win for the Lions in the 200 fly, as he finished in first, with a time of 1:56.27. Senior Nick Barron placed third in the event, coming in at 1:56.54. Junior Adam Powell added two more wins for Columbia, as he swept the sprint freestyle events, winning 50 free in 20.76, and taking first in the 100 free with a time of 46.19.
In the men's 1-meter diving competition, first-years Jason Collazo and Michaelangelo Borghi went 2-3, finishing with 278.70 points, and 272.93 points respectively. Collazo also finished second in the 3-meter boards, with a final score of 292.35.
The Quakers used another 1-2-3 sweep in the 500 free to stay on top of the Lions, but Esquen helped chip away at the lead, as he took first in the 100 fly, with a time of 50.98. Darren Pagan followed that up with a win in the 200 IM, taking the top spot in 1:54.10. The meet ended with Penn winning the 200 free relay, with the Columbia squad of Dougherty, first-year Joseph Jeffers, first-year Mitchell Phillips and Powell finishing second in 1:25.40.
Up next, the Lions return home to Uris Pool to face off against Ivy rival Yale. The two teams are slated to match up Saturday, November 14, at 4 p.m.
