NEW YORK – The Columbia women's tennis team laced up its sneakers on Sunday, November 15, but it wasn't for a normal fall practice. That day, the players took part in the inaugural Runyon 5k, an event to support the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation.
The event was a unique cancer research fundraising event, which took place at Yankee Stadium. Participants got to run or walk the concourses and ramps, climb the stairs between levels and enjoy incredible views of the Stadium from all angles. The event finished with a victory lap on the warning track circling the field.
100% of all donations raised go to cutting-edge cancer research by today's most brilliant and promising scientists, funded by the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation. For 63 years this cancer charity has selected and supported the rising stars of science - cancer researchers who have great potential to achieve breakthroughs in how we diagnose, treat and prevent cancer. So far, the Foundation has funded more than 3,200 scientists, including 11 Nobel Laureates.

"Personally, I thought it was the greatest experience because I'm a huge Yankee fan," senior captain Carling Donovan said after the event. "To be on the warning track and in the Hall of Champions of the stadium where my favorite team just won the World Series a few weeks ago was pretty much out of this world. For our team, I thought it was a great bonding experience for a great cause. We did the Race for the Cure earlier this year, and it means a lot to us as a team to represent Columbia University and Athletics to participate in these events. We feel more unified as a team when we participate in these events for a greater cause."
