HAMDEN, CONN. - Lauren Byrne recorded her first career goal and it couldn't have come at a better time. The junior's second half tally lifted the Lions over Quinnipiac, 3-2, for their first win of the season. This victory also marked the for first-year head coach Jana Woolley.
Columbia found itself down 2-0 early, but battled its way back to even the score at 2-2 entering the break. The Bobcats struck first with back-to-back goals at 11:02 and 13:00 to take an early lead.
The Lions cut that lead in half on perfectly executed corner. Katie DeSandis sent the ball to Byrne at the top of the circle for senior Catherine Campbell. Campbell fired a shot that Julie Hatchett redirected past Quinnipiac's Jenna Grossman.
The Lions' offense was just getting started and continued to pester Quinnipiac's goalkeeper, eventually knotting the game at 2-2 on an incredible effort by Jane Gartland. Leti Freaney had the ball in the center of the circle and sent it to a diving Gartland who scored far post.
In the opening half Columbia outshot the Bobcats 12-5 and held a slim 4-3 advantage in corners.
Bryne scored the go-ahead goal at 57:44 off another penalty corner, and the Lions defense buckled down to preserve the one goal lead.

Columbia (1-2) returns to action on Saturday, September 19 when it opens Ivy League play against Brown at the Columbia Feild Hockey Venue.
