NEW YORK -- The Columbia University women's soccer team returns to action for the third time in six days on Tuesday as it hosts Central Connecticut State at Columbia Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m. The Lions traveled to Long Island on Friday and tied with Hofstra, then took on St. John's at home and dropped a tough 2-1 decision.
LAST TIME OUT
Sophomore Ashlin Yahr found the back of the net for the third consecutive contest, but St. John's reserve forward Tatiana Duggan tallied the game-winning goal in the 71st minute to break a 1-1 tie as the Red Storm downed the Columbia women's soccer team, 2-1, at Columbia Soccer Stadium on Sunday evening.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
Central Connecticut State enters Tuesday's match with a 2-4-1 overall record, and is in the midst of a four-game road losing streak. The Blue Devils began the season by going 2-0-1, but have found the road to be less than kind. CCSU has been outscored 14-3 in the last four games. Central is led by senior Leah Blayney, who has recorded four goals and two assists. Clio Treagar has chipped in with three goals.
SERIES HISTORY
Columbia and Central Connecticut State have faced each other twice, with the Lions coming away with shutout victories in both games. Columbia won 1-0 on Oct. 3, 1995, and then dominated the Blue Devils, 5-0, in New Britain, Conn., on Sept. 29, 1996.
GOING BACK-TO-BACK
For the second consecutive week, a Columbia women's soccer player was named Ivy League Player of the Week. Ashlin Yahr garnered Co-Player of the Week accolades this week after compiling four goals in three contests. Yahr shares the award with Penn's Jessica Fuccello.
On the heels of senior Sophie Reiser and her conference award last week, Yahr picked up Ivy League honors after scoring a brace in the second half to lead the Lions to a 3-1 victory over Iona. The Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., product tallied goals four minutes apart from each other to help break a 1-1 tie against the Gaels. She currently leads the team and ranks third in the conference in points with nine (4G, 1A).
FAMILIAR FACES IN DIFFERENT PLACES
Although an ocean away from their hometowns, four student-athletes from Great Britain will be playing in the match on Tuesday (three Blue Devils - Clio Treager, Ciara Crinion and Beth Lloyd - and one Columbia player - Liz Wicks). Amazingly, all four of the young women attended Oaklands College, a secondary school (high school) in London. Crinion is the lone senior of the group, Treager and Lloyd are juniors while Wicks, the lone Lion of the bunch, is a sophomore.
