DALLAS - The National Football Foundation & College Hall
of Fame (NFF) announced today that it will relaunch and rename college
football's premiere scholar-athlete award, the Vincent DePaul Draddy Trophy, in
honor of William V. Campbell '62CC, Chair, Columbia University Trustees,
chairman of Intuit, former captain and head coach at Columbia University and
the 2004 recipient of the NFF Gold Medal.
"Columbia Athletics is proud and excited that the National
Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame has chosen to name one of its
highest honors after former Columbia football player and head football coach,
Bill Campbell. The William V.
Campbell trophy, to be given to the American college football player with the
best combination of academics, community service, and on-field performance, is
a fitting tribute to a special Columbian," said Dr. M. Dianne Murphy, Director,
Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education at Columbia University.
"Over the past five years, I have had the pleasure of
working closely with Bill. He is a
tremendous leader, whose passion for college football and Columbia is second to
none. As a football player, head
coach and Chair of the University Trustees, Bill's leadership means so much to
Columbia," Murphy said. "His
magnificent generosity over the years has benefited our University, athletics
program and football team - in so many ways. We congratulate Bill and the NFF on this outstanding
and deserving honor."
Known as "The Coach of Silicon Valley," Bill Campbell has
become one of the country's most influential business leaders, playing critical
roles in the success of Apple, Google and countless other high tech companies.
"No one exemplifies the best qualities embraced by the
National Football Foundation better than Bill Campbell. Every Recipient will have a very
special feeling of pride from having received an award in Bill's name. We salute Bill on this tremendous
honor," said Lee C. Bollinger, President, Columbia University.
Campbell captained the 1961 Columbia Ivy league Championship
Football Team and served as Columbia's Head Coach from 1974-1979.
"We are proud that one of our former football players - and
head coach - is being recognized with this wonderful tribute," Norries Wilson,
Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football said. "The William V. Campbell Trophy symbolizes college football's best in
academics, excellence on the field and leadership. No one embodies those traits better than Bill Campbell. This is an outstanding honor for a true
Columbian."
