
Men's Swimming & Diving Falls to Harvard, 196-102

NEW YORK – The Columbia men's swimming & diving team suffered its first loss of the season today, on the road in Cambridge, Mass., as the Lions fell to Harvard, 196-102.
Columbia opened the meet with a promising start, as the Lions won the 200 medley relay. Juniors Johnny Bailey, John-Howard Sidman, Bruno Esquen and senior Adam Powell won with a time of 1:32.98, giving the Lions an early lead. But Harvard answered by taking first in the next seven races. But the Lions had strong swims to stay in contention throughout.
Sophomore Sean MacKenzie came in second in the 1650 free in 16:03.20, and also in the 500 free, in 4:44.89. Bailey came in second in the 100 back in 51.64, and sophomore Patrick Dougherty took third in the event in 52.88. Esquen also had a second place finish in the 200 fly, as he hit the wall in 1:53.30.
Powell was a two-time winner for the Lions, as he took the top spot in the 50 free, with a time of 20.12, and also won the 100 free in 44.80. Esquen also had a big win for the Lions in the 100 fly, as he beat the field by almost two seconds, winning the event in 49.82. The Lions closed out the day as they started it, with a win in a relay event. In the 200 free relay, Powell, first-year Daniel Tan, Dougherty and first-year Eric Traub won in a time of 1:24.78.
Up next for the Lions is another away meet, as they will take on Army in West Point, N.Y., Saturday, November 20.
