During the final weeks of 2010, gocolumbialions.com will highlight some of the best moments of 2010, highlighting the outstanding accomplishments of our student-athletes, coaches and teams in random order.
February 28, 2010
The Columbia women's track & field team had an outstanding day at the 2010 Indoor Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, as the Lions achieved the highest point total in program history and finished second, just 15 points out of first place, and sophomore Sharay Hale was named the Meet's Most Oustanding Performer.
Hale won titles in both the 200 and 400m dashes in such a dominating fashion that she was named the Most Outstanding Female Performer of the meet. After running the fastest preliminary time ever in the 400 yesterday, Hale improved on her incredible performance Sunday. Hale won the event in 53.79, the second fastest time in Heps history, behind only one athlete, former Olympian Meredith Rainey.
Hale continued her domination in the 200m dash just a short time later. Hale won the event in a time of 24.20, a new meet record. The old meet record of 24.22 was set 13 years ago, and Hale had threatened to break it in the preliminaries, as she ran the fastest prelim time in meet history at 24.24.
At the conclusion of the meet, all of the Ivy coaches voted for one male and one female athlete they thought were worthy of MVP honors. On the women's side, that athlete was Hale, and she joined an elite group of athletes as the 2010 Ivy League Championships Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet.
At the end of the day, the Columbia women finished with 110 points, just 15 points out of first place and a team championship title. The point total was the highest in program history, far surpassing the program's previous mark of 63 points, which was set in 2005.
Hale went on to win titles at the Outdoor Championship as well, and qualified for the NCAA championships both indoors and outdoors. The then-sophomore earned All-American honors in the outdoor 400m dash in June.
