NEW YORK - The Columbia women's tennis team opened its spring break trip in Boca Raton, Fla., with a 7-0 win over local opponent NJIT. Columbia lost only one doubles match, and dropped just one set in singles, on the way to a dominating win over the Highlanders.
In doubles, the only duo to fall was that of senior Carling Donovan and first-year Katarina Kovacevic, who were playing together for the first time. The pair fell 8-3 in the No. 2 spot. But wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots gave Columbia the point. Junior Natasha Makarova teamed up with first-year Chelsea Davis to win at No. 1, 8-2, while sophomore Eliza Matache and junior Natalia Christenson won at No. 3, 8-3.
Singles saw every match except one won by a Lion in straight sets. First-year Nicole Bartnik led the charge in the No. 1 spot, as she beat NJIT's Nina Mayevska, 6-1, 6-1. Makarova, playing at No. 2, also made quick work of her opponent, Ana Lidon, as she won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. First-year Diana Shapoval shut out Dasa Stanimirovic in the second set, beating her 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6, while Matache had a 6-1, 6-3 win over Fanny Aizier at No. 5. Davis played at No. 3 for the Lions, where she beat Highlander Isha Toor, 6-4, 6-4, and Kovacevic won in a super tiebreaker, 6-0, 2-6, 10-7.
With the win, the Lions improve to 6-6 overall this season. Up next for Columbia is a 6 p.m. match against Clemson, which will take place Tuesday, March 16.
