NEW YORK - The Columbia women's tennis improved to 5-5 Friday, with a 4-3 win over George Washington in College Park, Md. The Lions were able to snap George Washington's two-match win-streak, and hand the Colonials their fourth loss of the season.
Though the Lions had a loss in the number one doubles spot, Columbia was able to take wins at Nos. 2 and 3, earning the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Eliza Matache and first-year Katarina Kovacevic paired up in the No. 2 spot for the first time, and were able to take an 8-2 win over GW's Jacqueline Corba and Dorota Lysienia. At No. 3 doubles, junior Natalia Christenson and first-year Diana Shapoval managed an 8-5 win over Sasha Gluck and Jennifer Hirsch. The wins were both crucial for the Lions, as the doubles point proved to be the different in the match.
