NEW YORK - The Columbia women's tennis team brought the 2010 season to a close with a 7-0 loss to nationally ranked Princeton Sunday, in Princeton, N.J. The No. 32 Tigers (20-5, 7-0 Ivy) claimed the Ivy League title with the win over the Lions (10-13, 1-6).
Princeton swept the doubles points in all three sports, and took all six singles matches as well to take the win from the Lions. In the No. 1 spot, co-captains Carling Donovan and Natasha Makarova fell to the No. 26 ranked doubles team in the nation, Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable, 8-2. At No. 2, Caroline Constable and Katarina Kovacevic fell to the sibling duo of Melissa and Rachel Saiontz, 8-1, while Natalia Christenson and Eliza Matache fell in the No. 3 spot, 8-1.
Columbia played a different singles lineup, as first-year Nicole Bartnik and Donovan were out with injuries. The Lions saw first-year Chelsea Davis play at No. 1 singles, taking on nationally ranked Hilary Bartlett, who is No. 63 in the nation. Bartlett won, 6-2, 6-3. The rest of the Lions also fell in straight sets. Makarova lost in the No. 2 spot to Melissa Saiontz, 6-1, 6-0, while Eliza Matache lost to Rachel Saiontz in the No. 3 spot, 6-01, 6-1. At No. 4, Kovacevic fell to Marable, 6-1, 6-2, while first-year Diana Shapoval lost at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0 to Blakely Ashley. And junior co-captain Natalia Christenson lost in the No. 6 spot to Monica Chow, 6-2, 6-0.
